On February 13, 2025, an information event “Certain aspects of participation in the Horizon Europe Programme” was held. This time, the event dedicated to the EU Framework Programme for research and innovation was held by the experts of Horizon Europe Office in Ukraine, NRFU in Kyiv. The event aroused great interest among representatives of higher education institutions, including vice-rectors for research, research institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises, state and local authorities, and NGOs.

The participants were welcomed by Olga Polotska, Executive Director of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, Yegor Pyvovarov, Policy Officer at the Operational Division II of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, and Olena Makarenko, Head of the Expert Group on Strategic and Integration into the European Research Area of the Directorate for Science Development of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. In their speeches, they emphasised the importance of involving Ukrainian participants in EU funding programmes, in particular Horizon Europe, which would not only contribute to the development of domestic science, research and innovation areas, but also facilitate integration of Ukraine into the European Research Area closer. They also emphasised the scope and significance of the powerful work provided by Horizon Europe Office in Ukraine as the Coordination Centre of the Programme.

In the I Working part, experts of the Office introduced the participants to the EU’s flagship research and innovation Programme Horizon Europe in general, as well as the results of the work provided by Horizon Europe Office in Ukraine for domestic participants of the Programme over the course of more than a year of its activity on the basis of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine. Additionally some other covered topics were: legal aspects of participation, application of open science practices in the HE projects, preparation of key Programme documents for writing a successful project application.

The II Working part began with a masterclass on working with the EU Funding and Tenders Portal and using its facilities to find calls, partners, etc. Other topics presented by experts of the Office included the specifics of applying financial mechanisms in Horizon Europe, and the possibility of funding in cascade based on examples of projects already underway. As usual, grant opportunities for businesses under the Programme were covered very deeply. This topic is always of great interest to a very large number of potential applicants. The final presentation was devoted to the project proposal evaluation process and selection criteria, which also require awareness to create successful applications.

The event ended with a very intense Q&A session, as well as networking, during which participants could talk directly to the Office team and ask their questions. Concluding the event, Igor Taranov, Head of Horizon Europe Office in Ukraine, thanked everyone who attended the event in person and participated online – more than 200 participants. The Head of the Office recommended taking part in the Horizon Europe calls more actively and applying for consultations and advice to the experts of the Office, who are open to a dialogue and support.
